Tony Nash has been running internet businesses since 1996. He has owned a recruitment agency, a chat software business, an internet marketing consultancy and for the past 15 years he has been the CEO of Booktopia. He started it on a $10 per day budget in 2004 and took 3 days to sell the first book. Now Booktopia sells one book every 6 seconds, with revenues in 2019 of $130 million, ships over 2,500,000 parcels via Australia Post every year and has had over 5,000,000 Australians buy from its store. Their Headquarters and Distribution Centre based in Homebush, Sydney has 13,000 square metres of space, $10 million of automation and 150,000 titles in stock ready-to-ship. Booktopia has over 200 employees, has been ranked in the AFR/BRW Fast 100 8 times, the only business to do that. They have been a finalist in the Telstra Business Awards 7 times winning NSW Business of the Year and Australian People’s Choice Awards in 2018. In 2016 and 2017 they were voted Australia’s Best Book Retailer. In 2018, Booktopia won Best Online Store at the ORIAs. Booktopia has built its own website, internal systems, automation software and algorithms. It has also donated over $750K in cash and books to literacy based projects in Australia. All of this, has been accomplished from that $10 note. There has been no external investment. Booktopia is one of Australia’s most significant business success stories in the past 15 years, in particular when the world has been talking about the death of bookstores, the end of the physical book and the annihilation of everyone by Amazon.
