Advice for Online Retailers
There is a ton of info and lots of “opinions” – cut through the noise and decide what you feel is right for your business.
When it comes to business, Laura is huge proponent of investing fully, trusting your gut, and failing fast. For retailers, that means investing wholeheartedly into your path, because split focus and hesitancy kills momentum. At the same time, Laura also supports people failing fast and moving on to the next idea. That includes bad technology and services! She firmly believes that throwing good money and effort after bad not only leads to bad investments, but to discouragement and lost momentum.
Speed is not just for identifying failures. Laura also advises that online retailers need to increase their execution speed. Often, retailers are trapped by slow or hesitant deployments that bog down the business and turn off the customers.
Globalisation is real, and Australians need to seize the day to take their brand global. It’s time for many brands to start internationalising their customers and their operations, especially in New Zealand, the US, the UK, Singapore, Japan, and Europe.
For retailers just starting out, Laura recommends making these strategies a priority:
- Focus on what your brand stands for and look to build a strong marketing message.
- Dive into social media and create a mobile-first or mobile-only platform – these two biggest online retail trends have proven time and again to be critical to success
- Fail fast, test and learn. Retailers need to listen to the marketplace and keep on moving when things don’t turn out as expected.
